Efficient and energy-saving removal of condensate

At Dansk Trykluft Industri, you will find a wide range of drains for compressed air systems – from electronic and pneumatic level drains to timer-controlled drains and magnetically activated filter drains. A drain has one essential task: to remove condensate and oil from your compressed air system without losing valuable compressed air. Proper drainage is a key factor for operational reliability and energy efficiency. Condensate that is not effectively removed can lead to corrosion, blockages, and reduced air quality, increasing the risk of downtime and costly maintenance. We supply and service drains from JORC – one of the world’s leading manufacturers of condensate management and energy-saving products for compressed air systems.

Level drains – intelligent and energy-efficient condensate discharge

A level drain operates automatically using level sensors that measure the amount of condensate and only open the valve when necessary. This means no loss of compressed air and more efficient operation.

We offer several types of JORC level drains:

  • Electronic level drains with alarm function and LED indicators that show operation and service requirements.
  • Magnetic drains, which are specifically developed for filter applications and also do not require power to operate.

These systems are compact, reliable, and easy to maintain, and they can be installed directly on filters, refrigerated dryers, or compressors. According to JORC’s technical specifications, modern level drains can handle pressures up to 16 bar, and many models have IP65/IP68 protection, making them suitable for demanding industrial environments.

Timer drain – reliable and flexible control

Timer drains are a simple and effective solution for automatic condensate discharge. The drain releases condensate at fixed intervals, which can easily be adjusted to the system’s needs – for example depending on humidity, load, or temperature.

  • The timer drains from the JORC series offer:
  • Adjustable time intervals and blow-off durations.
  • Operating ranges from 0 to 500 bar, making them suitable for both standard and high-pressure systems.
  • Multiple voltage options (24V, 115V, 230V) as well as valves in different materials such as brass and stainless steel.

These drains are often used in compressors, air receivers, refrigerated dryers, and filters, where a maintenance-free and reliable solution with low energy consumption is desired.

MAGY filter drain – magnetically activated without air loss

The MAGY drain is a magnetic, self-activating filter drain that operates completely without electricity and without air loss during condensate discharge. Using long-lasting magnets, a direct-acting valve is activated, which opens automatically when condensate is detected. This type of drain is ideal in installations where power is not available or desired, for example in sensitive environments, on filters, and under compressors.

Advantages of MAGY drains:

  • Fully automatic operation – requires no power supply.
  • No compressed air loss, which saves energy and costs.
  • Easy installation and compact design.
  • Manufactured in corrosion-resistant aluminum with FPM seals for long service life.
  • Maximum system pressure: 16 bar and a discharge capacity of up to 200 liters of condensate per hour.

MAGY is available in both single inlet and dual inlet versions, and the model can be equipped with a test button and an anti-air-lock adapter, ensuring optimal performance during maintenance.

Hvad er en olie/vand-separator?

An oil/water separator is a unit that separates oil from condensate formed during the compression of air. When air is compressed, water vapor, oil particles, and chemical contaminants are carried along in the process. When the hot, compressed air is subsequently cooled, the moisture condenses and binds with the compressor oil – resulting in an oil-contaminated condensate that must not be discharged directly into the sewer system.

Why should an oil/water separator be used?

There are several strong reasons why all compressor systems should use an oil/water separator:

Legislation and environmental requirements

Environmental authorities and wastewater regulations prohibit the discharge of untreated compressor condensate, as it contains oil, chemicals, and environmentally harmful substances. The catalogue clearly emphasizes that it is strictly prohibited to discharge the condensate without proper treatment.

Avoid expensive disposal costs

Without a separator, all condensate must be collected and disposed of as hazardous waste — typically at very high costs per liter. The document describes that this is both expensive and space-consuming, and involves safety risks when stored on site.

At Dansk Trykluft Industri, we also offer equipment rental, including rental of after-treatment equipment such as adsorption dryers and refrigerated dryers, nitrogen systems, etc.

Modern compressor oils require modern separation

Today’s synthetic and polyglycol-based oils form stable emulsions that cannot be separated with old gravity separators. Therefore, modern adsorption technology – such as in SEPREMIUM – is necessary to comply with environmental requirements.

Economic advantage

Since approx. 95% of the condensate consists of water, it makes economic sense to separate the oil and only dispose of a minimal amount of oil waste.

How does an oil/water separator work?

An oil/water separator operates by passing the oil-contaminated condensate through several filtration and adsorption stages, which gradually remove oil and hydrocarbons.

The technical process, as described in the catalogue, typically proceeds as follows:

1. The condensate is directed into the separator

Brass inlets ensure a stable and tight connection, and the system accepts condensate from all types of drains – timer drains, level drains, float drains, manual drains, etc.

2. Depressurization chamber

The condensate passes through a foam filter that equalizes the pressure and separates any air pockets, so the liquid moves evenly through the system.

3. Primary oil-adsorbing element

4. Secondary filter element

Additional oil is removed in the next tower, where another polypropylene element adsorbs the remaining oil particles.

5. Activated carbon polishing stage

Finally, the condensate passes through an activated carbon filter that polishes the water and removes the last traces of hydrocarbons, so the purified water meets local environmental requirements and can be safely discharged.

6. Visual indicator for filter condition

The SEPREMIUM series has a unique system where the filter’s indicator element sinks as it becomes saturated. When the indicator is at the bottom, the filters must be replaced. This method ensures reliable discharge with below 10 ppm oil — even under demanding operating conditions.

SEPREMIUM series

Key advantages:

  • Separates all types of compressor oils, including synthetic oils, polyglycol, and stable emulsions
  • Achieves outlet values of typically <10 ppm oil content
  • Built in robust PE with brass threads for industrial durability

The SEPREMIUM series covers capacities from small compressor installations up to 60 m³/min, and with the DISTRIBUTOR unit, multiple separators can be connected for even larger installations.

Efficient equipment for better energy management

In a world where energy efficiency is crucial for both the environment and companies’ bottom line, it is important to invest in equipment that can optimize energy consumption.

Heat recovery from screw compressors

Heat recovery is one of the most effective methods for reusing waste heat from screw compressors. In an oil-lubricated screw compressor, a significant amount of heat is transferred to the oil from either the gearbox or the screw element. By installing heat recovery equipment, this heat can be utilized for heating purposes, which not only saves energy but also reduces heating costs. This can be used for space heating, process water, or other systems in production. This enables companies to fully utilize their energy resources.

Equipment for energy optimization

Energy optimization is about minimizing unnecessary energy consumption and ensuring that the resources used are utilized as efficiently as possible. A key component of energy optimization is the use of advanced equipment such as AirSaver, which helps reduce compressed air losses by shutting down the system when it is not in use. This prevents energy waste and can lead to significant savings over time.

Leak detection with LD 500 and LD 510

Leaks in compressed air systems can lead to significant energy losses, and this is where leak detection equipment comes into play. With leak detectors such as LD 500 and LD 510, leaks in compressed air systems can be quickly identified and located. These detectors are precise and easy to use, and they help reduce compressed air waste, which can result in substantial energy savings. By investing in leak detection equipment, companies can avoid unnecessary operating costs and extend the lifespan of their compressed air systems.

Benefits of investing in energy optimization equipment

When companies choose to invest in equipment for energy optimization, heat recovery, and leak detection, they not only achieve financial benefits in the form of reduced energy bills, but also contribute to a sustainable future. Less energy waste means lower CO2 emissions, making these solutions attractive both for the environment and for companies’ CSR strategies.

A refrigerated dryer is the most common type of dryer used to remove moisture from compressed air. It works in principle like a refrigerator, where the moisture is removed by cooling the air.

Heat exchange (air-to-air):

The warm, moist compressed air from the compressor is directed into the dryer, where it is first cooled by the cold air exiting the dryer. This saves energy.

Cooling (circuit):

The air is then passed through a cooling surface (evaporator), where a refrigerant cools the compressed air down to approximately +3 °C. Since cold air cannot hold nearly as much moisture as warm air, the moisture condenses into water droplets (condensate). Separation: The water droplets are collected in a water separator and discharged from the system via an automatic drain.

Our refrigerated dryers are of very high quality and are available in several variants and many sizes, depending on the requirements.

Pressure dew point:

A refrigerated dryer can typically produce a pressure dew point of +3 °C.
